Volunteer Opportunities

The Animal Services Section is responsible for the operation of the Yolo County Animal Services shelter and animal control services to the cities, unincorporated areas of the county, and the property of the University of California at Davis. The program is supported primarily through contracts for service with the cities, generous donations from citizens and businesses, and dog licensing fees.

Yolo County Animal Services is now also responsible for all rabies control enforcement in Yolo County, working in conjunction with the Health Officer.

Shelter and patrol staff focus on the abandoned, stranded or cruelly victimized animals in Yolo County. Shelter for these animals makes the community safer and provides a loving home for animals that might otherwise have been euthanized. The State of California regulates Food and Agriculture codes. These codes require extended holding periods for stray, feral, and relinquished pets. The law allows more time for animal adoption and the results are subsequently overcrowding at shelters.

You can help reduce animal overpopulation by spaying or neutering your pets. All animals adopted from shelters must be spayed or neutered. A law in effect since January 1, 2000, requires an owner whose animals are impounded to pay fines and additional fees, if those animals are not spayed or neutered.

To help combat the shelter overcrowding problem, Animal Services built the T.S. and K.D. Glide Annex which is used to house felines as well as other small animals through a generous donation from the Glide Foundation. The annex includes a medical equipment area. The Glide Foundation has provided the Yolo County Animal Shelter financial support in the form of donations since 1997.

As part of the Hill's Shelter Program, the Yolo County Animal Services Shelter feeds Hill's Science Diet.

Monthly Vaccination Clinics

Dates and times vary, please call for an appointment.

Cost:

Dogs - $8 for Rabies vaccine (dogs must be at least 4 months of age), $20 for DHPP vaccine (Distemper/Parvo)

Cats - $8 for Rabies vaccine (kittens can be vaccinated at 8 weeks of age), $10 for FVRCP (Upper Respiratory Infection)

Microchip and Registration - $15

Volunteer Opportunites

Animal Services has volunteer opportunities for persons over the age of 18 years. Volunteers assist the shelter with the care of adoptable animals, making their stay the best it can be, greet the public and assist them with getting around the shelter and transporting rescue animals. Volunteers also assist the Yolo County SPCA at the shelter with Lost and Found and Pet Finder duties. Please contact Margot Wilcox, Volunteer Coordinator, for more information.
