Cops In Schools provides a Sheriff’s Deputy in the county schools
as a ‘School Resource Officer’ (SRO). The SRO is an asset
used by the community and the school in an attempt to address situations
in the lives of students in a forum other than the judicial system.
The
SRO is highly visible to the
students and attempts to stop
problems that may occur on
or around the school grounds.
Besides being an active, high
profile law enforcement officer,
the SRO participates in the
classroom by lecturing on class
topics such as the history
of law enforcement, search
and seizure, constitutional
rights, criminal law, and drug
abuse. A full range of prevention
programs for students in kindergarten
to 12th grade. Topics include
personal safety, conflict resolution,
drug, alcohol and violence
prevention, along with bullying
prevention and a DARE follow
up program.
The
School Resource Officer’s
duties extend beyond the classroom
and normal workday. The SRO
participates in PTO and faculty
meetings, club projects, and
social functions.
The ‘Cops
In Schools’ program is
a proactive approach to deal
with the pressures of today’s
youth. The ultimate goal of
the program is to maintain
and improve the safety of the
learning environment and for
prevention and deterrence of
school violence and drug abuse.
The officer integrating the
SRO concept into our schools
will build a solid rapport
between the students, the local
school system, and law enforcement.
